Shintaido: self-care movement training

Shintaido
At every TouchPro Technique seminar we teach a self-care movement
form called Shintaido, which means new body way.
Shintaido was developed in Japan in the 1960s by some of
the top martial artists at that time. They sought to create a new
form of movement that would embody the modern desire for peace,
cooperation, and mutual understanding among people of all cultures,
rather than to cultivate a competitive fighting art.
More than a simple health exercise, it is an art form, somewhat
like brush calligraphy performed with the whole body.
In TouchPro seminars we teach the "Kenko Taiso" warm-up
exercises of Shintaido. These are not only good for maintaining
practitioner health and well-being, but can also be a good tool
for clients.
A teaching video of the Kenko Taiso sequence is available at the
TouchPro store. The
Shintaido of America website
contains many other books and videos, as well as a schedule of classes
throughout the United States.
Voice Dialogue Seminar
Part of the TouchPro approach is the understanding that our work
life should not only be an expression of our creative urge (to leave
the world a bit better place than we found it), but it should also
be a vehicle for our own personal development.
Voice Dialogue training is a tool I have incorporated into my work
that has had a significant impact on my understanding of my inner
world and how it affects my outward work and personal relationships.
I learned the work from close friend, John Kent, some ten years
ago. John lives in England but will be in San Francisco to teach
a Voice Dialogue seminar on April 1-3, 2005.
Here is John's summary of the Voice Dialogue process:
Do you ever talk to yourself? Have you ever heard yourself say
something like, "A part of me really feels uncomfortable when
I'm around certain people; another part of me doesn't want to say
anything in case I upset them; and another part of me thinks I'm
stupid for letting them get to me in this way!"
In the late 1970's, Drs. Hal and Sidra Stone developed a technique
for tuning in to these voices and allowing the different parts of
us, or selves, to be heard more clearly. It is called Voice Dialogue
and provides a very practical tool for helping us handle all kinds
of relationship issues - with loved ones, clients, neighbors, friends
and, most importantly, with ourselves.
"Selves or parts are constantly operating in everyone......
they are the energy systems that experience life. When we use Voice
Dialogue, we are becoming sensitive to the dramas played out by
these selves."
- Hal Stone, Ph.D.
I am one of the bigger skeptics around when it comes to people
messing with my mind, thanks to ten years running social service
agencies. However, this work is totally self-directed (nobody forcing
you to go places your conscious or unconscious selves don't want
to tread) and the people who initiated it are not using the work
to create a big mega-bucks corporation ( a la EST, LifeSpring).
This is simple work based on the "psychology of selves."
I like it because it allows me to access parts of unconscious that
have valuable insights for my conscious selves. I call it high-speed
meditation because it alters my usual mental state and drops me
into alternate levels of awareness very quickly where I can see
"me" from a very different point of view. I also like
it because it is simple, non-pretentious work that avoids any feeling
of "hocus pocus." It is very easily understood.
You can download John's complete description
of these workshops in word processor format. If you would like more
information, check out the Voice
Dialogue website and noodle around their Reading
Room. You will find many articles and a list of their books
and tapes. Alternately, contact me directly and I will be happy
to answer any other questions.
The seminars will be held at my house in San Francisco, so there
is a limited number of participants. I guarantee an extraordinary
mind-expanding, life-changing experience.
